The 4th day of the 4th Summer School “Multidisciplinary Approach to Global Crisis Mitigation” featured insightful lectures on pressing global health and environmental issues, presented by international experts.

Berita UNAIR Pascasarjana, Selasa, 11 Juni 2024  –  Dr. Munir Ahmad from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, discussed “Biochar: A Sustainable Solution to Combat the Global Threat of Microplastics.” He highlighted the severe impacts of plastics exposure on human health and emphasized biochar as a potential solution. Biochar, a carbon-rich product from the pyrolysis of organic waste, showed significant potential in retaining microplastics compared to sand filters, with BC300 and BC700 biochars demonstrating up to 20 and 33-fold higher retention, respectively. Dr. Ahmad stressed the importance of analyzing commonly consumed food and drink products for microplastics to prevent their hazardous impacts on health.

Asst. Prof. Napadol Procha from Walailak University, Thailand, presented on “Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in the Environmental Context: A Challenge in Public Health.” He highlighted AMR as a significant global health threat, responsible for 1.27 million deaths in 2019. Prof. Procha emphasized optimizing antibiotic use, enhancing infection prevention, environmental management, and fostering international cooperation as key strategies to combat AMR. He stressed the need for collective efforts from governments, communities, and individuals to tackle this pressing issue.
