Postgraduate School Universitas Airlangga, in collaboration with United Nations University Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS) and International School of Economics of M. Narikbayev KAZGUU University, is pleased to announce the Third Summer School on Comparative Regionalism with this year’s focus on “Understanding the role of regional mechanisms in mitigating crises from multidisciplinary perspectives”. This hybrid event which will be held in Surabaya, Indonesia and in online format is dedicated to exploring the role that regional organizations and mechanisms play in mitigating various types of crises, including economic, environmental, health and political crises.
States and international organizations have turned to regional mechanisms to tackle consequences of recent or ongoing crises like pandemics, war and conflicts, or disruption of global supply chains. Some recent examples of UN regional frameworks for action in such fields as health, SDGs or education; regional responses to COVID-19, or reinvigorated role for regional organizations in security (EU and NATO). United Nations University researchers characterized regional cooperation as an integral combative tool against complex global emergences. According to World Economic Forum regional collective actions, like sharing best practices for mitigating the spread of pandemics, coordinating fiscal measures or boot trade across borders, offer important lessons to ensuring the global coordination needed to recover from crises.
The aim of Third Summer School is to understand how regional mechanisms can foster resilience of states and societies in the face of crises, promote sustainable development, and enhance connectivity within and between regions. The summer school is designed for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners from various disciplines including law, international relations, economics, political science, sociology, and environmental studies. It aims to provide participants with a multidisciplinary perspective on the role of regional mechanisms in crisis management.
