Background

Current debates caused, among others, by erosion of liberal international order are bringing into fore the importance of regionalism projects. Regionalism is at the center of scholarly and policy debates for many different reasons. It can concern fate of regionalism projects (Brexit), (in) action of regional organizations in addressing peace and security challenges (ASEAN) or role of regional frameworks in design of alternative visions of international order (Belt and Road Initiative or Eurasian Economic Union).

Regional organizations from Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Eurasia increasingly engage, establish and enhance dialogue mechanisms. Understanding the logic of regionalism in post-Covid global order necessitates an in-depth comparative approach which sees regionalism as a lasting feature of world order. This online summer school on comparative regionalism aims to bridge regional knowledge on comparative regionalism.

Objectives

The main objective of The Online Summer School on Comparative Regionalism in The Changing World is to expose participants to the field of research on comparative regionalism in global arena in the context of emerging powers and shifting political/economic balances. Participants will be introduced to major cases and main theoretical and methodological frameworks used in comparative regionalism studies. They will also study and compare role of regionalism projects in different regions of the world from the perspective of their contribution to national development and international order as well as their mutual interactions, highlighting the opportunities and challenges globally.

The summer school will bring together students from the world with accomplished scholars of comparative regionalism. As such, it represents a valuable opportunity for young researchers to improve their knowledge of regionalism and to build long-lasting academic networks in this sphere. The school will consist of invited speeches, lectures and workshops. Information on speakers and topics are found below. Detailed information on lectures, workshops and assignments will be provided to students after selection.

Course Content, Instructors, and Schedule

Summer school will be hosted virtually by the Post-graduate School, Airlangga University Indonesia, in collaboration with United Nations University Institute Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS), Belgium and Higher School of Economics of M. Narikbayev KAZGUU University Kazakhstan, on 21-25 June 2021.

The course would be accredited as 5 ECTS. Participants will receive a certificate of completion signed by organizing entities. They will have to submit a short reflection paper (1000 words) and group presentation in order to receive a certificate. Participants would receive course modules and materials as according to the topics and scheme beforehand.
