News of UNAIR Postgraduate School, 8 May 2021 – Postgraduate School of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held an online Public Lecture on the topic, THEORY OF HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT. Present as a speaker Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khatijah Omar as Associate Fellow of Academi Sains Malaysia (ASMI) as well as Associate Professor of Management & Human Resource Management Faculty of Business Economics & Social Development Universiti Malaysia, Terengganu, Malaysia. Also present as a moderator Dr. Nuri Herachwati, Dra. Ec., M.Sc., M.Sc., from UNAIR Postgraduate School.
Khatijah states that the purpose of developing human resources (HR) is developing training for humans. HR development is the core of HR management itself. Therefore, HR development must be able to generate the expertise of HR so that it can be useful for himself, his organization, and the system in which he is located. Continuous training for employees until their latent potential can arise is a must if you want to maximize the potential of each HR.
In addition, Khatijah argues that human capital theory is the most relevant economic theory applied to HR development. “If we want our employees or human resources to change, it must be done through education or training, where employee personality can be improved. In addition, if we want our employees to be useful to us, then the leadership is obliged to pay attention to their health. Human resources whose health is not in prime condition will not be able to release their maximum potential, “She said.
Moreover, the development of skills and human resource capacity needs to be continuously improved in the digital era like now. Economic theory teaches people how to utilize existing resources to get the commodities or services they want. With advances in technology, especially in artificial intelligence like now, fewer employees are needed in a company or agency, because companies will utilize AI and machines to produce more goods that can reduce operational cost. This is true in modern countries where machines replace manual labor and jobs that can be replaced by automata. The greater capabilities and competencies of human resources improve the quality of the products produced, not the number of workers that must be focused on, because the number of products can be replaced by machines and artificial intelligence technology.
