UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga Postgraduate School (UNAIR) is holding a webinar on Higher Education Orchestration in Realizing Sustainable Energy. The webinar was held on Monday, February 15, 2021, by inviting Ignasius Jonan, SE., CA., MA or Jonan as the speaker.
In the event, Jonan reminded the webinar participants that the use of sustainable energy has started in the world and is starting to lead the global market. This is evidenced by the shift in the types of companies included in the ten largest companies in the world.
“In 2008, of the 10 largest companies, there were 5 companies that extracted natural resources. However, in 2010, out of the 10 largest companies, almost no companies extracted natural resources, ” explained Jonan.
In 2008, five of the ten largest companies in the world that extracted these natural resources included PetroChina, Exxon, Royal Dutch Shell, Gazprom, and Sinopec. This trend then shifted in 2018, where nearly ten of the largest companies in the world did not take natural resources for sale. These include Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Tencent, Berkshire, Alibaba, J&J and JP Morgan.
The trend of using sustainable energy has begun to develop, due to data showing that in 2020, the Tesla company, which produces electric cars, is included in the top 10 companies in the world based on market value in December 2020. The Tesla company ranks ninth, beating the car manufacturing companies that are still utilize petroleum for fuel. In fact, the number of cars produced by Tesla is no more than the car manufacturing companies that still use petroleum.
Not only Tesla, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited which was founded in 1987 also ranks in the Top 20 largest companies in the world by market value. Jonan explained that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited itself is a company that produces microchips for electric vehicles and for artificial intelligent (AI).
“It (data list of the largest companies in the world, ed) shows future predictions that encourage sustainable energy,” he continued.
According to Jonan, the development of sustainable energy is very important, especially for Indonesia because Indonesia is nearly ten centuries behind other countries in developing sustainable energy.
