Airlangga Forum with Head of Real Estate Indonesia Association: Innovation Within Higher Education

News of UNAIR Postgraduate School, 28 May 2021 – Postgraduate School of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held an AIRLANGGA FORUM webinar on Friday, May 28, 2021. This time, it was presented with the topic WHEN ALUMNI TAKES SOLUTIONS: HIGH EDUCATION INNOVATION FOR NKRI. Present as speakers from outside UNAIR such as Totok Lusida as General Chairperson of the Indonesian Real Estate Central Executive Board (DPP REI), and dr. Ario Djatmiko, Sp.B. Onk., As Founder of Surabaya Oncology Hospital. Meanwhile, from the UNAIR Postgraduate School, present The Director Prof. Badri Munir Sukoco, The Deputy Director I, Assoc. Prof. Rudi Purwono, and Deputy Director III, Suparto Wijoyo. 

Badri stated that there are two conditions for becoming a developed country. They are increasing the relevance of higher education to what the job market needs, and technology innovation. Regarding technological innovation, the WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM in 2016 predicted that around 78 million human jobs will be replaced by automation. However, the lost jobs will also create new job opportunities, namely about 132 million new jobs generated by the fourth industrial revolution through automation. Developed countries have anticipated this, as well as Indonesia through the Freedom of Learning Program. This program launched by KEMENDIKBUD, Nadiem Makarim, seeks to increase the relevance of higher education to industry and the job market.

Meanwhile, Totok Lusida explained that the current situation is entering V.U.C.A or stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, in which the changing era creates uncertainty in every industrial sector and labor market. To tackle V.U.C.A, there are four things to focus on. First, higher education is necessary to train students to be skilled at communicating with industry, so that they can add networks to the industrial world and the economy. Then higher education needs to collaborate with stakeholders, especially in the field of work distribution and research, because it cannot be done alone. The third and fourth points are critical and creative thinking, where students are not only able to think critically about the existing paradigm or science, but also creatively develop something that is expected by the industry so that they can be quickly absorbed in the job market. 

In line with this, Djatmiko also stated that besides producing technology and knowledge, universities also produce excellent human resources. He also mentioned the mutation of nursing staff in units that were not in their field, which resulted in fragmented knowledge, so that their expertise was not focused. If fragmented knowledge is continued, then the harmony in health services and its accuracy will not run optimally.
