“Comparative Regionalism In and For Asia: Central Asian, Eurasian and Southeast Asian Perspective”

Podcast Airlangga Forum, 17 Mar 2021 – As the pace of globalization continues to change and affect the economic system of Southeast Asia and even the world, the Central Asian region is a trade route as well as a major regional power that has abundant resources. But central Asia is a part of Asia that can be said to be unbalanced due to a lack of cooperation between the country’s leaders in Central Asia. Therefore, The Graduate School of Airlangga University held an International Webinar forum themed “COMPARATIVE REGIONALISM IN AND FOR ASIA : CENTRAL ASIAN, EURASIAN AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN PERSPECTIVE”.

The event was hosted by speakers such as Dr. Ikboljon Qoraboyev (Associate Professor of International Relations, M. Narikbayev KAZGUU University), Dr. Rossa Ristawati, LL.M (Postgraduate School universitas Airlangga), H.E. Rahmat Pramono (The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of Kazakhstan and Tajikistan in Nur Sultan), Dr. Paradorn Rangsimaporn (Minister Consellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Royal Thai Embassy in Nur Sultan , Kazakhstan), Prof. Badri Munir S., S.E., MBA., Ph.D. (Director of Postgraduate School universitas Airlangga), and Dr. Shynar Zakiyeva (Head of International Office of M. Narikbayev Kazgu University).

According to Dr. Paradorn Rangsimaporn, ASEAN could be one of the alternative economic and political partners as part of Kazakhstan’s potential foreign policy. ASEAN countries as a successful political and economic model to emulate. Asean’s involvement is important because it plays a major role in Asia-Pacific integration. ASEAN experience as a model that can be an example for the Central Asian region.

On the other hand, H.E Rahmat Pramono argues that, one of the biggest contributions to ASEN’s success is measures to build confidence that continues to be promoted and developed intra-regimentally, and with external partners. Then bring incentives for members to strengthen ASEAN cooperation.

According to Dr. Ikboljon Qoraboyev, ASEAN as a model for Central Asia from a global governance standpoint, a regional approach that can help Central Asia propose common positions and local solutions relevant to the challenges of globalization. Regional alism will also help Central Asian countries to forge regional autonomy and their regional resilience in an environment characterized by the presence of a number of major powers.
