Airlangga Forum Podcast: New Directions of Leadership

Recently in Indonesia, there has been done an election for city mayors and regents for some regions for the 2020-2025 period. This makes some regions and cities have its own new elected leader or a re-elected old leader. For the new elected leaders, it becomes their duty to lead their regions and or cities for 5 years ahead. The new elected leaders have substantial responsibilities as they have to always keep on making innovations and solutions for their regions and cities that still have regional problems. Postgraduate School Universitas Airlangga through Airlangga Forum 13th edition held a discussion forum carried out a theme “New Directions of Leadership” by inviting some speakers such as Prof. Badri Munir Sukoco (the Director of Postgraduate School Universitas Airlangga), Fandi Akhmad Yani (the Elected Regent of Gresik district), and Dr. Rohman Budijanto, S.H., M.H. (the senior editor of Jawa Pos). This program is hosted by Assoc. Prof. Suparto Wijoyo (the Vice Director III of Postgraduate School Universitas Airlangga).

Mr. Fahmi, the elected regent of Gresik district, explained that there are still several problems that should be solved, especially the current problem about flood in some areas in Gresik. This happens because of the poor infrastructure that makes flood happen. Other than that, many citizens also complain about the lack of prosperity with the appearance of several industries in Gresik district. This also becomes the duty for Mr. Fahmi to make use of big industries to increase the citizens of Gresik prosperity. Transformations is also needed to do to give something newer than the way of leadership from the previous regent.

Prof. Badri also have a case study happened in Pittsburgh that is known as the Steel City. In around 1970/1980, the steel industry in decline as it lost competitiveness that made a great number of population moved to another city from 2 million inhabitants became 100 thousand inhabitants. With that condition, the mayor of Pittsburgh did a transformation by having collaboration with some universities in Pittsburgh such as Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburgh University to develop the service in big hospitals there. This brought a success for Pittsburgh for doing transformations by the appearance of great number of population to have their own business after 20 years passed. According to the other speaker, Mr. Rahman, there are 3 (three) kinds of leadership that can do transformations through new innovations, such as (1) leaders with no ideas, no directions, and disturbed their employees who want to make innovations by preserving their own personal matters, (2) leaders with no ideas and directions, yet letting their employees to make innovations and control them not to beyond the limit, and (3) leaders with directions and was once in government field, also have employees with high spirit in making innovations.
