News of UNAIR Postgraduate School, 22 Jun 2021 – Bringing the theme of Comparative Regionalism in a Changing World Order 2021, the Online Summer School organized by the Graduate School of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) was officially started on June 21, 2021, and will last for 5 days. In the opening of the online summer school, Director of UNAIR Postgraduate School, Prof. Badri Munir Sukoco, explained that the first day of the summer school was a place to introduce students to regionalism issues which are currently being highlighted. “Regionalism can be said to be the focus of policy in various countries. Moreover, the presence of the Covid-19 pandemic will certainly change the world order. For that reason, we need to understand each region’s perspective on various global issues through comparative regionalism,” he explained.
The Indonesian Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, H.E. Rahmat Pramono, emphasized the importance of comparative regionalism studies, to be able to respond to multidimensional issues using the appropriate perspective. Meanwhile, Dr. Saule Kemelbayeva, the Dean of the Higher School of Economics M.Narikbayev KAZGUU University Kazakhstan, in his welcome video expects collaboration from all program participants through their innovative ideas and active participation.
At the opening of the summer school in the afternoon Indonesia time, it was attended by two leading experts on regionalism issues who became the keynote speakers, namely Prof. Philippe De Lombaerde from United Nations University (UNU) Institute of Comparative Regional Integration Studies Belgium, who explained the basic theories of comparative regionalism and its future potential and current developments. Meanwhile, Dr. Farkhad Tolipov as Director of Non-governmental Research Institution ‘Knowledge Caravan’ Uzbekistan focused more on the issue of regionalism in Central Asia, particularly related to integration, geopolitics, and theories that form regionalism.
The execution of this event is the result of collaboration between the Postgraduate School of UNAIR with KAZGUU University Kazakhstan and United Nations University (UNU) Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies Belgium, which is managed by Convenor Dr. Rosa Ristawati from UNAIR, Dr. Ikboljon Qorabayev from KAZGUU University and Dr. Fililipo Costa Buranelli of St. Andrew University UK.
With 102 applicants, the convenor selected and passed 59 participants from 23 countries, including the United States, Malaysia, Cambodia, Argentina, China, Thailand, Azerbaijan, India, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Nepal, Mexico, Scotland, Tajikistan, United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, Brazil, Nigeria, and of course Indonesia. This online summer school is designed with a combination of lectures, workshops, and self-study with instructors and tutors from various institutions such as the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) Africa Program, London School of Economics and Political Science, St. Andrew University UK, KAZGUU University Kazakhstan, Ghent University Belgium, as well as the best lecturers from UNAIR.
